Caress Graffiti (1997-2007)

These pieces combined the caress technique developed to transcribe action, within a symbolic matrix of words. The caress was shown as a black line, which was embedded in a twisting set of graffiti-like marks, whose colors change to represent the color of the object touched by the caress. In these works, the physical action literally swims in a sea of symbols. One potential interpretation of this dynamic is that our mortality is defined by the interaction of symbol and action, in that the symbolic realm is needed to frame actions, and alone remains when we are gone (like bones protruding from the sands of a desert). In all cases, the text used for these works relates to contemplative statements or to words describing the creative process for other artists and writers.
