Written Word Flows through Patterned Backgrounds (1991-2003, 2007-2010)

This work followed the formalism described for (j), but further juxtaposed the mosaic of antiquity with modern language bouncing around it. The checkered background or regular pattern represented the expectations of order from a culture, whereas the stream of text represented the fluidity of organic adaptation and emotional drive which will ultimately break the constraints of any ordered system. Information theory (Shannon & Weaver, 1949) describes limits to communication (e.g., Hicks, 1952; Hyman, 1953); such limits partially reflect the assumption set out of which a culture was organized, and the assumptions that may be hidden yet still active in any medium we use to interact with each other. Again, this work is not framed in a sterile conceptual context.
